The Heinävesi Museum is situated on the church hill, next to the church and
near downtown Heinävesi. The museum building is a former granary. The
building’s longer wing is from the beginning of the 19th century and the
expansion from 1900. The museum was founded by the Heinävesi Association and
was opened to the public in 1961. Since 2002, the municipality of Heinävesi
has been responsible for the museum and for running it.
The exhibition, which is grouped into themes, is located on the top floor of
the building. The history of Heinävesi and its residents is on display,
starting with the Pit-Comb Ware period from up to 5,000 years ago. The museum
has a sizeable collection of tools for farming, hunting and fishing, as well
as products made by local artisans and craftspeople. The exhibition also has
artefacts related to the original activities of the museum building, i.e.,
when it was still a granary.
Across from the museum is the former parish hall, which was built in 1852 and
was used for town meetings, as a gaol, a telephone exchange, a mother and
child health care centre, a savings bank, a post office and an upper
elementary school. The building housed a handicraft information centre from
1973 to 2005. Currently, the house is used by local weavers and a 4H club.
The museum room in Heinävesi
Church is also quite nearby.
